Do you want me to say, “It was a great plan, mwahahaha!” before I fly off on a magic carpet?

I was born and raised in this country and was just as shocked as everyone else to learn there were people on this earth so vile as to commit such a horrific attack - or to even think about doing it.

But I didn’t do it. Neither did 99.999999999 percent of the roughly 1.5 billion people in the world who also call themselves Muslims. So why should I or any other Muslim apologize for what happened?

Nickleback is planning on releasing another album. Should I ask white people to apologize for that?
”

-
Aman Ali (via faineemae)

The fact that we can’t have an adult electoral process is rooted in this kind of frenzy of who can we blame, and how fast.

[…]

That business of four years being the metric for anything? We have a political culture that everyone plants annuals, they plant pretty flowers that come up the next spring. What we need is a political culture where somebody plants a fuckin’ olive tree, which doesn’t even give you an olive for seven years. That’s how you fix an economy…When that olive tree becomes an orchard.
”

- David Simon, creator of the television series The Wire,on why the question “Are you better of than you were four years ago?” is the most corrosive question in Politics today (via milonga-of-the-dead-man)

milonga-of-the-dead-man:

I just think we're moving in that direction. I can't say it's in the next five or ten years, but I definitely think it's on the horizon.

Amy K. Nelson: Does it have to be the quarterback [who comes out]? Can it be the reserved player at first?

Wade Davis: I'll be flat-out honest with you. It probably shouldn't if he wants to keep his job. If he wants to keep his job, if he's the 53rd man on the roster, if he's a free agent who's fighting for a job, maybe he shouldn't. I would hope that he would, I would hope that he feels that he can, but if you want me to be flat-foot honest with you, it probably shouldn't be, just because I don't want to tell someone to give up their lifelong dream of playing in the NFL to ... you know what, yes, it should be. You know, screw it. It should be. I don't want to be in the business of telling anyone they can't live their life authentically. I don't want to do that anymore. It's just not what I'm about anymore. So I want anyone, whether you're the first man or the 25th man or the last man or even someone on the practice squad, to come out and say, "You know what? I'm gay, I'm still a great athlete, and I'm an even better human being."

"It’s not too much to ask men and boys to “look, but don’t touch.” A young woman who wants to be..."

“It’s not too much to ask men and boys to “look, but don’t touch.” A young woman who wants to be noticed, even desired, without being assaulted isn’t making an unreasonable request. She’s not defying the facts of biology. She’s asking to be watched, appreciated, and left unharmed. Saying that she’s asking to be raped is like saying that a talented actor who portrays an unsympathetic villain particularly well on screen is asking to be attacked by an outraged member of the movie-going public. There’s a difference between a performance and an invitation, and it’s not that hard—really, it’s not—to distinguish the two.”

-
Sexy Halloween Costumes for Girls Don’t Cause Rape — The Good Men Project (via sexisnottheenemy)

I’m all for skepticism, but I just went to this website and read 3 different articles by Hugo Schwyzer, who I was previously unfamiliar with, and I didn’t see anything rapey in his writings, or faux feminist for that matter.

“Same-sex couples should be able to get married.”—President Obama

This is great and all, but I feel like I just keep thinking that this should have been said a while ago

"However fierce our band was in the past, imagine me, six foot two, in heels, fucking screaming in..."

“However fierce our band was in the past, imagine me, six foot two, in heels, fucking screaming in someone’s face”

- Laura Grace (Gabel) in the rolling stone magazine (via sinktothebottom)

MCA’s Feminist Legacy | The Nation

MCA’s Feminist Legacy | The Nation:

…that’s what was so remarkable and emotional about the Beastie Boys’ feminist turnaround. Maybe your father says sexism doesn’t exist and your boyfriend disrespects you. Maybe you have to deal with assholes on the subway who rub up against you every day and laugh when you yell at them. But listening to this band that you love so much say that your pain is real, that the world is fucked up and that they are not going to participate in actions that hurt you anymore because they care about you—it was the overwhelming feeling of being made visible. They were sending a clear message to their female fans: this isn’t okay, we have your back, we’re sorry.

I want to say a little something that’s long overdue / The disrespect to women has to got to be through / To all the mothers and sisters and the wives and friends / I want to offer my love and respect till the end

Excellent article. The Beastie Boys change of heart when it comes to women in their lyrics and lifestyles is a model that more hip hop artists should take note of

pearinbloom:
